Human CXCL8 (6-77) (IL-8, interleukin-8) is a 72 amino acid N-terminally processed form of CXCL8(1-77). CXCL8(6-77) is the most abundant form of CXCL8 and has the highest biological activity. The prototypical CXC chemokine, CXCL8 binds and activates the receptors CXCR1 and CXCR2 to drive neutrophil recruitment in inflammatory responses. CXCL8 is also a ligand for the ACKR1 receptor. CXCL8 participates in angiogenesis and tissue repair and can contribute to pathological conditions like chronic inflammation, cancer metastasis, and atherosclerosis when dysregulated.
