Human CXCL12 gamma (stromal cell-derived factor 1 gamma, SDF-1 gamma), is an 88 residue isoform of CXCL12. A long C-terminal extension rich in basic residues adds strong heparin-binding properties that anchor it to tissues. Seven CXCL12 isoforms (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, etc.) arise due to alternative pre-mRNA splicing and vary mainly in tissue expression and the length and composition of a C-terminal sequence extension.
