Human CXCL8 (IL-8, interleukin-8) is a 77 amino acid protein produced by endothelial cells and fibroblasts. Cleavage of the N-terminus yields the major species CXCL8(6-77), which is also more active as a neutrophil chemoattractant than CXCL8(1-77). The prototypical CXC chemokine, CXCL8 binds and activates the receptors CXCR1 and CXCR2 to drive neutrophil recruitment in inflammatory responses. CXCL8 is also a ligand for the ACKR1 receptor. CXCL8 participates in angiogenesis and tissue repair and can contribute to pathological conditions like chronic inflammation, cancer metastasis, and atherosclerosis when dysregulated.
